We’re for LA or is it NY?

Written by Kaheem on August 23, 2008 – 12:48 pm -

An interesting discussion at TVNewsTalk, talks of a TVNewsDay article comparing the now revived “We’re 4 New York” campaign at WNBC, and it’s remake of “We’re 4 LA” at KNBC in Los Angeles.

Speaking as a New Yorker, you can guess which one I like better. Here are the two versions:

“We’re 4 New York”

“We’re 4 LA”

CBS2 Sponsors Summer Streets

Written by Kaheem on August 7, 2008 – 3:06 pm -

WCBS-TVFor the next 3 Saturdays in August (9th, 16th, 23rd), NYC will close down Park Avenue and some adjacent streets around Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge between 7am to 1pm.

This event takes a valuable public space - our City’s streets - and opens them up to people to play, walk, bike, and breathe. Summer Streets provides more space for healthy recreation and is a part of NYC’s greening initiative by encouraging New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. Weathercaster Lonnie Quinn will be on deck during each event, broadcasting the forecasts via satellite.

Olympics Mania!

Written by Kaheem on August 7, 2008 – 2:46 pm -

Besides NBC showing all 3,600 hours of the Olympics starting on August 8th, the network launched NBCOlympics.com, and gave each station a ‘local coverage‘ section, highlighting local athletes, Olympic parties, photos ect.

Team 4 NY is also included, and they’ve made some headway since I first told you about it. It’s worth browsing for a few minutes. They’re really getting into it.

Freedom for some broadcasters

Written by Kaheem on August 7, 2008 – 12:01 pm -

We’re back after an extended absence. A story from AM New York, shares how NY broadcasters have diffuculties finding work in nearby regions.

Apparently, certain stations in NY require that broadcasters not take a job in the same market for a set amount of time after they leave, making it difficult for some to find jobs without having to uproot their lives to a new region. That will change when Gov. Patterson signs a bill, banning stations from enforcing that in their contracts.

“With the approval of this bill, we hope to empower broadcasters with greater independence as they pursue employment options,” Paterson said in a written statement.

Team4NY

Team4NY

Although this is an attempt to gain more viewers, WNBC launched a new campagin to connect more with their current viewers, and show them what they’re really capable of.

In spirit of the Beijing Olympics, News 4 NY put together a team made of the best, per say, to show us their olympian skill. Chuck, David, Darlene, Len, Janice, and Michael make up Team4NY. We’ll follow them through training until early August when they show us what they learned.

Each were asked to pick two sports, and then it was left to viewers to pick which one they would perform. Here are the selections.

  • Chuck Scarborough: Fencing
  • David Ushery: Trampoline
  • Darlene Rodriguez: Taekwondo
  • Len Berman: Badminton
  • Janice Huff: Gymnastics
  • Michael Gargiulo: Track and Field-Pole Vault, Hurdles

You can read their responses to the choices at WNBC.com. I can only imagine what will happen (I bet Meredith Vieira knows).

Maybe I’ll take the job, maybe

Written by Kaheem on July 18, 2008 – 9:05 pm -

When it’s a slow news weeks come during summer months, it gives anchors a chance to enjoy a little sun and allow others a few moments in front of the camera.

As NewByte2, Priya David, a CBS News reporter, was caught filling in for Mary Calvi on Saturday. The rarity of this occasion just leaves one to wonder, will there be an opening at WCBS soon? Only time will tell.

The same also follows WNBC’s Darlene Rodriguez, who has been frequently filling in for Sue Simmons at 5, 6, & 11. According to the NY Daily News‘ Richard Huff, “Rodriguez, who normally works the morning shift, added an energy and life that have been missing in the evening. Moreover, the shows seemed to be produced at a faster pace, too.”
